ShareCopy ShareSexual dysfunction is a common complaint of sexually transmitted infections (STIs) in men, often affecting men in their early 20s and 50s. A recent systematic review and meta-analysis examined the effectiveness of various sexual dysfunction medications. The review found that the evidence of effectiveness for sexual dysfunction medications varies widely and there is a lack of evidence to suggest their use. This study aimed to assess the effectiveness of Viagra (sildenafil) for the treatment of sexual dysfunction in men.
This was a cross-sectional review of the literature and an economic analysis, conducted using the Medical Dictionary for Regulatory Activities (MedDRA) for English language articles. The database was reviewed to identify eligible studies. The review included articles that investigated the efficacy of sexual dysfunction medications in men who are or might be sexually active.
Sildenafil was compared with Viagra to assess whether it is effective and safe for treatment of sexual dysfunction in men who have a past history of erectile dysfunction, including pulmonary hypertension, pulmonary arterial hypertension, aortic stenosis, benign prostatic hypertrophy (BPH), and heart failure. The results showed that Viagra was efficacious and safe for the treatment of sexual dysfunction in men who have a past history of erectile dysfunction. However, this finding was not confirmed by a single study.
Sildenafil was compared with sildenafil and tadalafil, but the two medications showed differences in efficacy. Sildenafil was effective in 70% of the trials, whereas tadalafil was efficacious in only 7% of trials.
Sildenafil and Viagra were efficacious in 70% of the studies, but a small number of studies reported that they were associated with serious side effects, such as priapism, sudden death, and erectile dysfunction, or adverse events. The results of these studies did not show any differences between sildenafil and Viagra.
In conclusion, sildenafil is effective and safe in the treatment of sexual dysfunction in men who have a past history of erectile dysfunction. The findings of this study suggest that the use of sildenafil is an appropriate treatment for erectile dysfunction, but the results were not confirmed by a single study.
